the sofa bed and sleepovers

This blog post, the title would suggest, is about a piece of furniture and its function. It is about that, sort of … but it’s also about visits with friends and family from out of town that begin one day and continue on to the next. Since my move (back) to Montréal last year, if I do a count, I get to 21 people who have made the trek (not all overnight chez moi, but most of them were, and some more than once, I might add, hooray!).

And there are plans for visits in the works (always). Good, that’s how I like it.

About those visits, those friendships (and of course, my two, adult, out-of-town daughters, counted among my favourite sleepovers), I would like to say this: I love the mid-mornings with coffee and the late nights with music, the long walks and long talks. I hold close, the laughter and even the brief moments of sadness, as sometimes can happen with a long talk, after all. These are visits of shared time and space, food and drink, the sounds of life around us, or embracing the quiet, when no words are said, no words are needed.

When I look at my sofa bed (pictured above), that’s what I see. And I could kiss the ground. For every friendship. For the bonds that have been there for decades (how I love, love, love those people) and for those that have begun to form this year (how lucky when a crossing of paths turns into friendship).

And the interesting thing is, you often don’t know, when a first hello will become an enduring friendship. That’s for other blog posts, though, because I have a few (more) tales to tell in that department.

All to say, as the winter holiday season begins, wherever you are, I hope you get some time with friends … near, far, old, new … so that you can tell them that you love them, or kiss them on the cheek, or hold their hands in yours … or something.

Today is December 1st … we’re in the home stretch to the end of the year … I think, if possible, kiss a friend on the cheek for every day that’s left in this year.*

*An aside for friends that I see this month: you may get more than one kiss on the cheek from me, so that I can reach the quota of 31 … but I’ll give you fair warning when I see you 😉
