Some weekends, I want to make zero plans. Some weekends, I want to zip up my walking boots, put a magazine in my bag … and just walk around Montréal. After about five kilometres, I’m ready for a break and depending on the time of day, I’ll stop for a coffee or a beer.
I came across Mellön brasserie on one such trek. It was early summer 2022, not long after they opened. The sun was streaming in through their open garage door, flowers sat in mason jars on long picnic tables, plants hung from the high ceilings.
I’ve been to Mellön a handful of times in the past year or so. The beer is good and those pouring it behind the bar are friendly and knowledgeable. In warm weather, the wrap-around patio is often bustling. In the colder weather, the large windows and greenery (along with what is on tap or in the fridge pour emporter) draw a steady stream of people stopping in for a pint (or two).
Since they opened, for locals and visitors both, Mellön is sometimes the only plan for the afternoon or evening.
