I know that to mention the “end of summer” at this time of year is almost blasphemy in most places across Canada. So, I’ll refer instead to the photo above (taken in Montréal’s Mile End neighbourhood this summer) and offer a few discoveries uncovered in my search for something to tell you — about summer and about Mile End — that may not be likely to surface on their own in your online travels.
Summer: On the first day of summer in Montréal (June 21st) this year, the sun rose at 5:05 in the morning and set at 8:46 in the evening (daylength of 15:41:06). On the last day of summer this year (September 22nd), the sun will rise at 6:41 in the morning and set at 6:52 in the evening (daylength of 12:11:08).
Mile End: “Montreal Bohemia and the Mile End Apartment Party Scene” is the title of a book chapter written by Will Straw, a professor of Urban Media Studies at McGill University. His lengthy and interesting list of publications and other work includes topics such as discothèque culture in Montréal and “night studies” as an interdisciplinary field of research.
All to say … enjoy the sunshine and the moonlight … in what is left of this summer of 2023.
